When Tomorrow Came: Book Review

When Tomorrow Came by Hannah Linder is a novel for fans of period romance dramas. This historic novel in historic London delves into shattered hopes and disappointment caused by grandiose dreams of others’ essence being crushed via reality. Further, it explores familial dynamics as well as navigating adult love and life with unhealed trauma.

When Tomorrow Came: The Premise

Following two people, Heath and his younger sister Nan, readers are pulled into a multi-layered narrative of love, loss, grief, healing, growth, faith, and more. The author does a phenomenal job packing emotional punches, and the audiobook version brought me to tears within the first few chapters.

The official book blurb reads:

Nan and Heath Duncan, siblings abandoned by their papa and abused by their guardian, have no choice but to survive on the London streets. When a kind gentleman rescues Nan from such a life, the siblings are separated and raised in two vastly different social worlds. Just when both are beginning to flourish and years have healed some of their wounds, their long-awaited papa returns and reunites them—bringing demands with him. Nan is expected to marry a rich suitor she’s never liked, and Heath is expected to forsake his gentle spirit and become the hardened man his father always was.

Dangers unfold, secret love develops, fights ensue, and murder upsets the worlds Heath and Nan have built for themselves.

They’ve waited their whole lives for their papa to return, for tomorrow to come—but now that it has, will they be able to see through to the truth and end this whirlwind of a nightmare before it costs one of their lives?

“Perhaps tomorrow

belongs to God.”

My Thoughts

My heart was on a wild ride with When Tomorrow Came. I would be sad and despondent and then clenching my fist in frustration. Just to turn around and–dare I say–release a breath I didn’t know I was holding. To then turn to smile to the point I was hyperaware of my face. The reader is easily able to trek along with characters as they experience the story and all emotions. This is a clear mark of a talented author. I will without a doubt be reading more work by Hannah Linder.

Who exactly will love When Tomorrow Came? Though fantasy is my primary genre of choice, I am reading more and more books from romance and historical backgrounds. If you enjoy such works by Louisa May Alcott and Jane Austen, you will enjoy the characters and overall vibe in this novel. Do you also fancy some mystery, mayhem, and murder in your books? Then this is definitely one you want to add to your reading list!

When Tomorrow Came, however, will be a fast favorite for readers who especially enjoy emotionally raw narratives. Further, fans of the “I don’t want a husband and will never fall in love”, “touch her and die,” and “love after a broken heart” tropes will be drawn to this work.

Conclusion

Overall, When Tomorrow Came is an absolutely beautiful story with powerful prose. It reminds us all that, with God’s grace, healing is possible. We are never too far gone, too far lost, or too far damaged. Highly recommend!
