Water Horse by Katie Hanna: Book Review

Water Horse by Katie Hanna is a book that bridges Westerns, fantasy, and Irish mythology. It also includes some spooky elements, (nothing too scary, however). But, though this book is one of the most unique genre conglomerates I’ve personally ever read, the love story is what makes this book remarkable.

What is Water Horse About?

George Calhoun is a rancher who marries Meg O’Shea to prevent her from being forced to return to the Denver Lunatic Asylum after she escapes. Both partners hold onto to secrets because of fear of rejection and failure; but, how can a marriage survive without complete transparency? In a wild world of flesh-eating horse-like creatures and a monster who feeds on nightmares, can a marriage that starts without love turn into one?

Romance Thread

The romance thread is reminiscent of Love Comes Softly by Janette Oak and Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. Adult readers who crave books with strong men with big hearts, soft women who can still hold their own, and themes of found family, overcoming past trauma, healing, and fantastical twists in romance stories, will fall head over heels for George and Meg in Water Horse. With cowboys, wild horses, magic, and love powering the determination to be and do better, this book will stay with you for a while.

There is an age gap of about 10 years within the romance. Though I haven’t previously loved that trope, it isn’t off putting here. It is important to note the book includes profanity in dialogue among the cowboys, but no major bombs are dropped. There is also kidnapping, forced imprisonment, and violence (including assault and murder). Because of this, it may not be for everyone.

My Rating for Water Horse

This book should definitely be on your TBR if you love a good, solid, clean romance! Excellent writing with great characters. I highly recommend this book for adult readers–a 5 star read for me! I’m looking forward to more work from author Katie Hanna.

*I received an Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book from the publisher. I am leaving a review of my own volition, and all thoughts and opinions are my own.*
