Rowan Tritonia has one desire: for life to be like it was before her sister Blythe became sick. With the arrival of her sixteenth Naming Anniversary, Rowan resounds to use her year’s wishes, however many she gets, for Blythe’s health. Unfortunately, instead of wishes, Rowan is struck with an ailment of her own. Her brown eyes mysteriously turn magenta, and she experiences the world in only grayscale. This Sight, removing color from her vision, allows her to see the light and darkness in a person’s heart. It is a power seen only in stories of unicorns in the Book of Verimor, an ancient text.

News of Rowan’s Sight travels quickly, and when the King of Wisteria learns of her ability, he summons her to the capitol asserting she can aid the kingdom as tensions are on the rise with the neighboring nation. Leaving everyone and everything she knows behind, Rowan travels to the capitol with still only one desire: find a cure for Blythe. Trying to understand her own heart, Rowan must navigate a tangled web of who she can and cannot trust in a time of political and spiritual war or risk failing her sister.
